This list of resources represents documents, Web sites, and more formal publications that are referred to within ICPSR digital preservation documents. These resources include local, national, international, and community-wide documents that reflect the prevailing standards and practice of the digital preservation community in the form of standards, guidance, and reports, and that document digital preservation policies and practices at ICPSR. These resources contain links to relevant ICPSR digital preservation documents. Resource entries may contain links to more detailed reviews of and responses to the resources.

Title:JTS 2007 Program
Organization:Joint Technical Symposium
Description:This Web site for the joint conference organized by AMIA and the Coordinating Council of Audiovisual Archives Association features many relevant and timely presentations. While the full proceedings have not yet been added to the JTS2007 Web site, the JTS2004 Web site (http://www.jts2004.org/) is complete and includes transcripts and copies of many speeches and presentations.
At ICPSR:This is a conference for staff at ICPSR who are working with digital video to attend or track.

Description:The homepage for the working group that creates standards for coded representations of audio-visual materials.

Title:Open Archival Information System (OAIS) Reference Model (PDF)
Organization:CCSDS
Description:The Open Archive Information System (OAIS) Reference Model, an ISO standard that formally expresses the roles (producer, management, consumer, and implicitly archives), functions (common services, ingest, archival storage, data management, administration, preservation planning, and access), and content (submission information package, archival information collection, archival information package, and dissemination information package) of an archive. It was approved as an ISO standard in 2003. OAIS is undergoing a five-year review in 2007.

At ICPSR:ICPSR is committed to developing its digital preservation program in conformance with OAIS. OAIS is due for a revision in 2007.

Title:Preservation Metadata Implementation Strategies (PREMIS)
Organization:OCLC; RLG; Library of Congress
Description:The PREMIS data dictionary and associate documents were developed by a working group convened by OCLC and RLG. The maintenance activity for the data dictionary and follow-on developments is hosted by the Library of Congress.
At ICPSR:ICPSR is including the PREMIS data dictionary in its review of requisite preservation metadata and we will document our steps to respond to the PREMIS data dictionary and findings.

Title:Preservation Towards Storage and Access, Standardised Practices for Audiovisual Content in Europe

Title:Preserving Access to Digital Information: Audio and Audiovisual Material

Description:This bibliography provides thorough coverage of research and practice in the field of digital preservation for audiovisual materials. A number of the resources are two or three years old, but may still be of use.

Title:Preserving Digital Public Television
Organization:National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation, Library of Congress
Description:This is the Web site for the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation group that is investigating the potential for digital technology to be used in preserving public television assets. As of August 2007, they have posted their research and recommendations on selection and appraisal criteria.
At ICPSR:This is one of the NDIIPP partner projects, like the Data-PASS project in which ICPSR participates.

Title:Sustainability of Digital Formats: Planning for Library of Congress Digital Collections

Description:This Web site provides detailed descriptions and comparisons of many digital file formats. It considers a variety of criteria including current usage, sustainability, quality, functionality, history and format specifications (or standards). The site currently provides information about formats for still images, sound recordings, textual content, moving images, and web-based conent.
At ICPSR:This is an autoritative source about preserving file formats for ICPSR's digital preservation program.

Title:Trusted Digital Repositories: Attributes and Responsibilities (PDF)
Organization:RLG/OCLC
Description:The Trusted Digital Repositories document was released in 2002. It represents the first time that the organizational context for digital preservation was brought together in a document and so explicitly defined, the first time that the costs of digital preservation were explicitly addressed (Financial Sustainability), the first time technology was not placed at the top of the list of isses to consider, and the first time the need for explicit documentation of policies and practices was acknowledged.
At ICPSR:ICPSR is striving to reflect the attributes of a trusted digital repository.

Title:Trustworthy Repositories Audit & Certification (TRAC): Criteria and Checklist
Organization:Center for Research Libraries
Description:The TRAC document identifies a set of criteria for an organization to address to demonstrate the level of and means for its conformance with prevailing standards and practice for digital preservation. Each criterion provides explanatory text and examples of evidence of compliance.
At ICPSR:ICPSR has been using the TRAC document as a framework for an ongoing process of self-assessment and development to align existing workflows with digital preservation practice, for example.
