Using National Juvenile Corrections Data Files: 1997-2006

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data, ICPSR, University of Michigan announce a workshop on Using National Juvenile Corrections Data Files: 1997-2006.

What topics are covered? Trends in juvenile corrections populations at the national and state levels, the residential facilities that hold them, the variations in practices in place, and the services provided to young persons in custody.

Who should attend this workshop? State and local juvenile justice researchers, academic researchers, and policy makers at the local, state, and federal levels. Jurisdictional teams are welcome.

Purpose: This inaugural workshop will make a wealth of national data from OJJDP’s data collections from 1997–2006 available to researchers and practitioners along with the tools necessary to understand and use the data appropriately.

Objectives: Participants in this 3-day workshop will learn to analyze multi-year national data files on juvenile corrections using the Secure Survey Documentation and Analysis (Secure SDA), a powerful online data analysis tool that enables descriptive to multivariate analysis of data from different surveys and over time.

A Resource Guide to Juvenile Corrections Data Files provides details on the following data sets that will be covered in the workshop:

  • Census of Juveniles in Residential Placement (CJRP) 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2006
  • Juvenile Residential Placement Facilities Census (JRFC) 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006

Stipend: Stipend support of up to $1,000 for travel and living expenses is available for a limited number of participants admitted to the workshop. Please indicate a request for stipend in the letter of support.

Applications must include a vita and a short application letter. Please indicate your jurisdictional partners, if applicable, in the letter. Supporting materials can be submitted electronically through the Summer Program registration portal on each applicant’s Summer Program page.

You are invited to participate in a one-hour conference call with the Workshop faculty on Monday, April 20, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. EDT. The purpose of this teleconference is to answer applicants' questions about the workshop, to help you hone in on appropriate research questions prior to submitting your application and to help faculty tailor their instruction to the needs and interests of the workshop participants. Participation in this call is optional. Questions or suggested items for discussion at the teleconference should be submitted prior to 12 noon on April 20, 2009 to nacjd@icpsr.umich.edu.

Application deadline: April 27, 2009. Applicants who are selected will be contacted shortly after May 1, 2009.

Fee:  There will be no tuition fees for accepted participants.
