Four Network Analysis workshops offered this year. How to choose the one that's right for you.

This summer ICPSR is offering four different courses on network analysis, ranging from introductory to advanced levels. The courses will be held in three different locations, and they range in length from three to five days. Consider the following factors when making your decision on which to attend:

Dates: Four different weeks in July and August. See the individual listings for specific dates.

Locations: Ann Arbor, MI; Bloomington, IN; Chapel Hill, NC

  1. Introductory Level and Pace:
Three of the workshops provide a basic introduction to the methodological techniques associated with social network analysis. These classes are appropriate for participants with a minimal background in statistics, and no prior experience with network analysis. Please note that a three-day course cannot cover as much material or go as much in depth as a five-day class.

    • Three-day Introductory Workshop:

      Network Analysis: An Accelerated Introduction
Location: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Instructors: Ann McCranie and Stanley Wasserman, Indiana University
      Dates: August 20-22, 2009

The Accelerated Introduction workshop provides a somewhat faster-paced introduction to the material. Participants must have a firm grasp of statistical concepts and methods, but need no prior experience with network analysis.

    • Five-day Introductory Workshop:

      Social Network Analysis: An Introduction
Location: University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
Instructor: Katherine Faust, University of California, Irvine
      Dates: August 3-August 7, 2009

  2. Advanced Level and Pace:

    • Network Analysis: A Second Course
Location: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Instructors: Ann McCranie and Stanley Wasserman, Indiana University
      Dates: August 23-25, 2009

Network Analysis: A Second Course covers more advanced topics in network analysis. Participants must have had exposure to, and some experience with, the methodology of network analysis, at about the level of the introductory workshops described above.

  3. Theoretical Coverage

    • Network Analysis: Theory and Methods
      Location: Indiana University, Bloomington
Instructors: Ann McCranie, Stanley Wasserman, and Bernice Pescosolido, Indiana University
      Dates: July 6-10, 2009

Theory and Methods takes a broader look at network analysis, placing it firmly within the context of social research. This class will cover not only the methodology, but also the theoretical concerns and substantive backgrounds of network studies.

ICPSR Summer Program a Family Tradition for Mother-Daughter Duo

Pauline & Natalie Beange

The ICPSR Summer Program has become a family tradition for the Beange family. In Summer 2008, Pauline Beange and her daughter, Natalie, both attended the program at the same time. In prior years, a father and son have participated as instructor and student, and siblings have attended, but never at the same time.

When Natalie was looking at graduate programs, a professor at the University of Toronto encouraged her to attend the summer program and offered to advise her graduate work if she did. Natalie's decision to attend the Summer Program inspired her mother to bring her own dreams to fruition and enroll too. "It's been something that I've wanted to do for a long time. "It worked out really well for the both of us. We even got along!" said Pauline.

Pauline is working on her doctorate in political science at the University of Toronto and is writing her dissertation. When asked why she chose to attend the Summer Program, Pauline said "Because it has an outstanding reputation and I could do it in one month." She added, "It's slightly humbling that Natalie's taking Regression II and I'm taking Intro to Statistics."

Natalie reflected on her month in the Summer Program saying, "We've thoroughly enjoyed meeting people from so many disciplines and so many different countries. It's very flexible - you can change your courses once you get here. It's really not intimidating. The professors are so good."

2008 ICPSR Summer Program

The 2008 ICPSR Summer Program was a great success! Our first five-day workshops began on June 2. The two four-week sessions ran from June 23 through July 18, and from July 21 through August 15, respectively. The 2008 Summer Program's faculty consisted of 82 instructors, who offered a total of 52 courses on a wide variety of methodological and substantive topics. In addition, the Hubert M. Blalock Lecture Series presented 13 sets of lectures on statistical topics, substantive issues, and professional development. The 2008 Summer Program had a record-breaking total of 829 participants representing 286 different institutions, 24 academic disciplines, and 24 different nations.
